Our Story

Oak Run Kennels

Oak Run Kennels was established in the fall of 2003 with the purchase of our first German Shorthaired Pointer. What began as a single dog quickly turned into a lifelong passion for bird dogs and the sporting lifestyle that surrounds them. Over the years, we have owned, trained, and hunted behind many exceptional dogs representing multiple pointing breeds. While each breed taught us valuable lessons, our commitment to and respect for the German Shorthaired Pointer has never wavered. The GSP remains the foundation of our program and the standard by which we measure all others.

At Oak Run Kennels, our mission is to produce a truly versatile sporting dog—one capable of excelling in the field while maintaining the temperament and intelligence required to be an exceptional companion at home. We strive to breed dogs that can compete at the highest levels of field trials and hunt tests, yet remain practical, honest hunting dogs first and foremost. Our ideal dog possesses the drive, stamina, and natural ability to hunt hard all day in the field, woods, and water, paired with the mental stability and disposition to seamlessly transition into family life once the day is done.

Our breeding program is built on careful selection, proven performance, and sound genetics. We place a strong emphasis on natural ability, bird sense, trainability, athleticism, and overall health. Each breeding is planned with intention and purpose, aiming to consistently produce dogs that meet our standards—not just on paper, but in real-world hunting and competitive environments. These dogs are bred to be reliable partners for hunters, competitors, and families alike.

Beyond breeding, Oak Run Kennels is deeply committed to education, mentorship, and long-term relationships. We believe purchasing a dog should come with continued support and guidance. When you acquire a dog from Oak Run Kennels, you become part of our extended family. We are always available to answer questions, offer training advice, discuss conditioning, or help navigate the world of field trials and hunt tests—whether you are a seasoned competitor or someone just getting started.

We strongly encourage owners to get involved in organized competition, as it not only showcases a dog’s abilities but also strengthens the bond between dog and handler. We take pride in helping our owners set goals and work toward them, providing honest feedback, encouragement, and assistance along the way. Our success is measured not only by titles and accolades, but by the satisfaction of our clients and the performance of Oak Run dogs in the field and in the home.

Oak Run Kennels remains dedicated to preserving the tradition of the versatile German Shorthaired Pointer—a dog that is as comfortable charging through cover in pursuit of birds as it is lying at your feet at the end of the day. If you have questions about our program, our dogs, or whether an Oak Run puppy is the right fit for you, we welcome the opportunity to talk. Our door—and our phone—is always open.
